The electric vehicle (EV) industry has seen rapid development in recent years, and one of the most critical aspects often highlighted is battery durability.
Many people worry that as mileage increases, the battery of an electric vehicle will experience significant degradation, leading to decreased performance.
However, a case study from a Tesla Model X 100D owner who traveled up to 200,000 miles (approximately 321,869 kilometers) in five years shows that Tesla’s battery durability is much better than expected.
Tesla Model X 100D: Performance After 200,000 Miles
According to unilad.com, Christian, a Tesla Model X 100D owner who first purchased the vehicle in 2018, has driven over 200,000 miles in five years. This vehicle has been used as daily transportation, even being nicknamed his “baby” by the owner, which reflects his satisfaction with the car’s performance.
Tesla itself estimates that their electric vehicle batteries will lose about 12 to 15 percent of their capacity after driving 200,000 miles.
However, Christian reported that his Tesla Model X 100D’s battery only experienced about a 10 percent decrease in capacity. This indicates that Tesla’s battery durability not only meets expectations but exceeds them.
High-Speed Highway Usage
Christian also tested the performance of the Tesla Model X 100D on Germany’s famous Autobahn, which has some segments without speed limits. He reported that his car could reach speeds of 150 mph (approximately 241 km/h) without significant issues.
Although this speed cannot be maintained for long periods, the Tesla Model X 100D can still comfortably drive at 125 mph (approximately 201 km/h) as long as the battery has sufficient power.
User Experience and Community Response
Christian first went viral in 2022 after sharing his experience through the YouTube channel Out of Spec Reviews. In the interview, he discussed his long journey with the Tesla Model X 100D and how the car continued to function well despite covering such a vast distance.
This garnered admiration from other users, especially regarding the high battery durability despite frequent recharging using superchargers, a fast-charging method generally considered less favorable for long-term battery health.
Numerous YouTube users responded positively to the durability of Christian’s Tesla Model X 100D. One comment expressed amazement at the battery still having 90 percent capacity after traveling 200,000 miles, even with frequent supercharger use.
Another comment mentioned that the roughly 10 percent battery capacity loss is an outstanding result, making them more inclined to consider purchasing an electric vehicle.
