Mercedes-Benz is poised to shake up the automotive world once again with the imminent release of its range-topping Mercedes-AMG CLE63. However, recent reports from Autocar suggest a significant deviation from initial plans for this high-performance model.
Initially, it was widely believed that the CLE63 would inherit the formidable 671-horsepower four-cylinder hybrid powertrain from its sibling, the C63. However, according to Autocar, Mercedes-Benz is pivoting away from this strategy in favor of the tried-and-tested twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 engine, augmented with mild-hybrid technology. This decision, reportedly informed by insider sources at Mercedes-Benz, could see the CLE63 delivering up to 585 horsepower—nearly 100 horsepower less than originally anticipated.
The move away from the high-output four-pot towards V8 power may be a response to public criticism and slower sales for high-performance four-cylinder models in Europe, as noted by Autocar. While sales data in the United States shows a slight drop in C-Class sales through the first quarter of 2024, the impact of this decision on American buyers remains to be seen.
Interestingly, while the new C63 models have just hit UK dealerships and pricing for the US market was announced in mid-April, the CLE63’s powertrain shift suggests a late-development decision by Mercedes-Benz. Despite attempts to reach out for confirmation or additional information, the automaker has declined to comment on the report.
If Autocar’s insights hold true, the Mercedes-AMG CLE63 will position itself above the CLE53, which boasts a 443-horsepower twin-turbocharged inline-six powertrain. However, it will fall short of the raw power offered by the outgoing C63. Enthusiasts and critics alike eagerly await the CLE63’s official debut later this year, where all questions surrounding its powertrain and performance capabilities will finally be answered.
