Great news for car shoppers looking for a luxurious mid-size sedan known for its outstanding safety performance! Both the 2024 Genesis G80 and its electric version, the Electrified G80, have received the prestigious Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
To attain the highest safety rating from the IIHS, a vehicle must first excel in six rigorous crash tests. These include assessments of driver-side and passenger-side small overlap front crashes, original side and moderate overlap front collisions, as well as evaluations of roof strength and head restraints. The IIHS also examines the performance of a vehicle’s standard and optional headlights, which must meet the “good” or “acceptable” criteria. Both the G80 and Electrified G80 have received an “acceptable” rating for their LED projector headlights.
Additionally, the IIHS evaluates the performance of active driver assistance features, specifically, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection in both daytime and nighttime conditions. Both sedans achieved the highest “superior” rating during daytime tests and an “advanced” rating for nighttime tests.
One noteworthy aspect to mention is that the Electrified G80 received a “marginal” rating (one step above the lowest score of “poor”) for the ease of use of its Latch child-seat anchors. Interestingly, the gasoline-powered G80 received an “acceptable” rating in the same test.
Genesis, Hyundai’s luxury brand, now boasts seven vehicles with the Top Safety Pick+ award for the model years 2023 and 2024. In addition to the G80 and Electrified G80, this prestigious recognition extends to the full-size G90 sedan, GV60 electric compact SUV, GV70 and Electrified GV70 compact SUVs, and GV80 mid-size SUV.
The 2024 Genesis G80 starts at approximately $55,000, including destination charges, and offers rear-wheel drive as standard with an option for all-wheel drive. The sedan provides a choice of two powertrains: a 300-horsepower, turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine or a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 generating 375 hp. As for the 2024 Electrified G80, priced at around $81,000, it has not yet received an EPA rating, but its 2023 counterpart had a maximum driving range of 282 miles as per EPA ratings. The Electrified G80 comes standard with all-wheel drive and is equipped with dual electric motors delivering a combined 365 hp.
